Rick Stonell on 19th Century weirdness

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 6:47 pm
Long before Roswell- long before ‘Flying Saucers’ were even mentioned - there was the great American airship mystery. For 2 years,1896 and 1897, strange aircraft were silently prowling the skies over the USA - occasionally exploring the surface with powerful searchlights
On April 17th, 1897 one of these vehicles was sighted at Aurora, Texas. Something went wrong. It lost altitude, collided with a windmill and exploded in flames (shades of the Hindenburg). According to the Dallas Morning News, the dead pilot was given a funeral in the town graveyard (at noon the next day). For too long, this historic event - possibly the first alien burial in the USA - has been overlooked.
